The Eagle and the Bandit

by

Barbara Lavallee

The eagle circled lazily

In endless skies of blue

Whit puffy clouds beneath her wings

The sun a golden hue.

She cocked her head to the side

Hearing a joyous sound

Of laughter rolling o'er the turf

Echoing off the ground.

There below, she caught sight of him

Furry bandit on his way

Broad bands of black around his eyes

A raccoon caught up in play.

His chuckling mirth moves his paws

Across his furry face

Oblivious to her slow descent

She removes all time and space.

Till there she sits in front of him

Eyes quickening, mouth agrin

Answering back the chuckling sounds

That come from the heart of him.

And so together they greet the world

With joy that they alone

Have learned from all life's ups and downs

Mirth replacing their deepest groan.

Still chuckling with face all alight

She lifts her wings to the day

Says her goodbyes to her furry friend

And laughing, flies away.
