The most significant piece of software a writer can use, except for a word processor

I'm going to be showing you a lot of stuff in here that should help you to become a better writer. And more importantly, hopefully you'll learn to be a better business manager as well. We all like to think that we're only in it for the art. The problem with that theory is that art doesn't feed the young'uns. You need hard cash to pay the rent and keep the power running to your Power Mac. Therefore once you've finished your masterpiece, use these resources to find a home for it.
If you're just getting started in this gig, you might try starting with the educational resources. Editors are pretty picky about insignificant details such as poorly formatted manuscripts, submitting to Mr. Jennifer Aniston and goofy stuff like that. There are some suggestions on these pages that will at least minimize the number of faux paux you commit. But don't blame me when they happen. I STILL screw up all the time.
Once you have a manuscript you're happy with, it's time to sell it. I can't remember who it was who said this, but one famous author once said (and I paraphrase), "Nothing stinks worse than a pile of unpublished manuscripts." I finally understood why my office smells the way it does. For marketing short stories, you're pretty much on your own. Go to the magazine publishers directory and see what you can find. Novels can be a bit stickier. I would suggest that you start by trying to find an agent. I'm trying to keep the agents directory up to date, but those people change jobs more often than my kid changes underwear. If you prefer to go it alone, the directory of book publishers is for you.
The last place I want to point you to is the Writer's Downloads area. I've put together a collection of very useful utilities and programs that will make your work as a writer a little bit easier. A particularly useful one if you are just getting started is the Writers Database. I wish I had started keeping a more accurate account of my submissions when I first started.
