2River An online magazine that features exclusively poetry. Before sending any poetry read the information on their submissions page.

3AM Magazine. Their tastes in fiction are, shall we say, different? Satire, horror and comics for the younger crowd. Check out their web site to see what I mean. Submissions go to submissions@3ammagazine.com.

3rd Muse Online poetry journal. A non-paying ezine with a very elegant layout. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable and they report back promptly. Check their submissions guidelines before submitting.

42Opus Accepts submissions of fiction in April, August and December. Submissions received in other months will be deleted unread. Poetry and reviews are accepted year round. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but previously published work is not. Submissions Guidelines Here.

5_Trope This is a haphazardly put together webzine that is difficult to navigate and features (IMHO) some real crap. According to their submissions guidelines they reject everything except real writing, and then in the never-ending list of things they reject, go on to describe everything related to real writing. But at least they don't pay anything. Have fun.

Aberrant Dreams Publishes speculative fiction, including sci-fi, fantasy and horror. They pay 3 cents per word up to $100.00. Click on the link appropriate to your submission. FANTASY HORROR SCI-FI ALL OTHER

Adbusters. Politically oriented print magazine. Take op-ed and fiction pieces up to 2K words. Pays $100.00 per page. Email submissions to kalle@adbusters.org.

Abyss and Apex Pays 5 cents a word up to $75.00 for fantasy, sci-fi, sword and sorcery and magical realism. Does NOT accept horror. They have changing submissions timelines for each issue, so read their submissions guidelines carefully before submitting.

Adventures in Sword and Sorcery. No website found. Pays three to six cents a word for stories that fit the title. Email submissions to double_star@yahoo.com.

Aesthetica A rather nicely crafted online "cultural arts" magazine featuring fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, art photography, commentary and so on and so forth. For the complete list, check out their submissions guidelines. They don't pay in cash, but the magazine is a high-quality print magazine and you get a free copy with your work. They accept electronic submissions only. Do NOT submit more than one piece per issue.

Afterburn SF Action oriented, well-written stories in Science-Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. They're also looking for artwork to illustrate their pages. They're a non-paying ezine, but a nicely crafted one. Submissions Guidelines Submissions Email

Albedo One They are looking for thoughtful, well written speculative fiction. Their definition of what constitutes SF, horror and fantasy is extremely broad and love to see material which pushes at the boundaries. They accept both postal and electronic submissions. Alice Blue A rather elegant ezine that is looking for ecclectic poetry and fiction. Send poetry HERE and short fiction or literary nonfiction HERE. Read their submissions guidelines for more details.

Alien Skin Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror. All stories MUST contain story basics of character, conflict, action and resolution. No excessive blood or gore. No erotica or blatant abuse of vulgarity. Pays 1 to 2 cents per word. They have some rather specific requirements on the Submissions Page, so check before submitting. They ONLY accept electronic submissions. Email Submissions.

Amarillo Bay. Non-paying ezine featuring fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Submissions guidelines are pretty will defined. Prefers mainstream literary, but will publish genre fiction with literary merit. Send submissions in the body of an email as text only. Do not send attachments.

American Drivel Review Publishes literary humor. They don't pay, but what wouldn't I give to be published in a magazine with a title like that?? Submission Email

Angler A new ezine featuring literary fiction and creative non-fiction. They're a non-paying market. Their non-fiction features some of my favorite subjects, including beer, art, beer, wine, cheese and beer. Did I mention they write about beer? Their submissions guidelines are about three pages long, but are actually quite writer-friendly. Send submissions in the body of an email. Don't send attachments unless specifically invited. Another Chicago Magazine They publish literary fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and photography. As their name implies, their preference is for material specific to the Chicago area, but will publish whatever they like. They only accept submissions between Feb. 1 and Aug. 31. Another Realm A nicely done ezine featuring sci-fi, horror and fantasy. They have specific reading periods listed in their Submissions Guidelines. They accept email submissions as long as the story is plain text embedded in the body of the email. Attachments will be deleted unread.

Anti-Muse. Prefers offbeat and unusual fiction. Pays $5.00 to $20.00 per story. Send submissions to antimuse@antimuse.org.

Any Dream Will Do. Prefers stories by and/or about people currently in or have been in mental health institutions. I queried them and my status as "should be in" doesn't count. Prefers humor. Email submissions to cassjmb@iqemail.com    

BardSong Celtic Fiction. Can be historical or mythological. No erotica. Email submissions to submissions@bardsongpress.com/      

Beehive.  From their guidelines page: "We are interested in new fiction, hypertext projects, poetry, critical theory essays, art and art historical essays. Our editorial policy is open - we are not limited to any specific genre or subject. We are most interested in writing that challenges..." Query before sending stories to beehive@percepticon.com.

The Binnacle Magazine  Ethnic, experimental, humorous and mainstream fiction up to 1500 words. Pays in copies. Accepts emailed submissions at ummbinnacle, or send submissions to University of Maine at Machias, 9 O'Brien Ave, Machias  ME  04654

Bonfire A nicely published print journal that comes out "at the eqinoxes and solstices". They feature fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction alike. Their submissions guidelines indicate that they accept email submissions.

Born Magazine Short poetry and proze in a so-so ezine. No pay, but they get writers from all over the world. Submissions Guidelines.

Brain Child Magazine. Serious fiction targeted to expecting or recent mothers. I submitted Ceremony of the Blood. Think they'll take it? Brain Child Magazine      

Broken Pencil.  They look for fiction, non-fiction and poetry that "defies classification." Sure enough the stuff on their site is pretty off the wall. Pays a minimum of $30.00 per story. Submit fiction to fiction@brokenpencil.com and non-fiction to editor@brokenpencil.com.

Burning Wood. A literary magazine targeted toward authors that like to read. Poetry, general fiction and flash fiction. They have an on-line submissions form rather than email submissions. 

Cadet Quest  Christian fiction aimed at boys from 9 to 14. Prefers adventure and sports oriented stories with a Christian theme. Pays 4-6 cents per word plus one contributors copy. Carve Magazine A rather elegant ezine featuring literary fiction. They accept email submissions but require that authors fill out an on-line form.

The Chatauqua Literary Journal  No website found. Contemporary poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Pays 2 contributor's copies. Mail submissions to The Writers' Center at Chautauqua, Inc.,  P.O. Box 613, Chautauqua  NY  14722. They do accept email submissions at cljeditor@aol.com but only respond to stories they accept.

Combat  Literary or genre fiction centering around war. Non-paying market. Email stories to majordomo@combat.ws.

Confrontation   No website found. Pays $25 to $250 for experimental, mainstream, slice-of-life or contemporary up to 6K words. You can query to mtucker@liu.edu, but you should mail submissions to A Literary Journal, Long Island University, Brookville  NY  11548

The Country Connection Pays 10 cents a word for mainstream, adventure, historical, or slice-of-life stories up to 1.5K words. Dakota Outdoors   No Website found.  Publishes articles and humorous fiction about outdoor sports  --  specifically hunting and fishing  --  in the Dakotas. Pays $5 to $15 for up to 1.5K words. Dark Energy Science Fiction  Accepts only Sci-Fi up to 50K words. Non-paying market. Submit by email only to www.darkenergysf.com.

Dead Letters. Takes you stories that have been rejected by other magazines and gives them a home until you get them published elsewhere. Submit to postmaster@deadletters.com.

The Dead Mule. “No good southern fiction is complete without a dead mule.” They publish short fiction (under 2500 words) about southern culture. They don't pay anything, but who WOULDN'T want to be published in magazine with a name like that? Send your stories to fiction@deadmule.com

Dirt Press. Traditional and experimental finished works of prose and poetry—from short fiction, personal essays, criticisms, partial scripts, lyrics, etc. Prose should be typed, double-spaced with standard margins and font, not exceeding 5,000 words. Poetry should be single-spaced. If emailed, you may either send the document as an attached Word file or paste it into the body of the message. Email to editors@dirtpress.com.

Drunken Boat. Progressive mainstream fiction, essays and interviews. Send your work to submissions@drunkenboat.com.

Elbow Creek Magazine. Wants stories in 1800's era old west settings. Pays $20.00 story or $50.00 for the featured story in each issue. 

Elmer Swims. This is one oddball site with some oddball writing. If this is how you write or what you like to read, then this place is for you. Email submissions to jmarica@aloha.net

Fortean Bureau is an interesting looking ezine. They pay four cents a word for horror with an original twist. Their website has some excellent pointers in what they're looking for along with some sample stories that are fun to read, if nothing else. They pay three cents per word up to a maximum of $60.00. Glimmertrain. Online literary journal. Sponsors a number of contests and has four months of the year in which they accept open submissions. Pays $500.00 for accepted story. Submission accepted only on their on-line form. Form located at http://www.glimmertrainpress.com/writer/html/index2.asp

Indy Men's Magazine isn't your typical men's magazine. One depressing aspect is that the women are wearing clothing. Secondly they're publishing fiction of literary quality instead of the Biker's and Babes sagas us guys have grown to know and love. I HIGHLY recommend you check out an issue to see what they're printing. But if you get published it's worth the effort. They're among the highest paying in the industry. They prefer shorter stories of 3000 words or less, but have been known to publish longer. Submit your stories as RTF or in the body of an email to lou@indymensmagazine.com.

Melic Review. Prefers short fiction of 1-2K words, but will go up to 5K if they think it's exceptional. Also published poetry and essays. The use an Online Submission Form.

The Pedestal Magazine is a gorgeous literary ezine that publishes high-quality fiction of any genre. They pay six cents a word up to 6000 words. They don't accept emailed submissions directly, but they have an on-line submissions form that is just as easy. 

Renaissance Magazine.  Short fiction, poetry, essays and reviews up to 2K words. Send submissions to submit@renaissancemag.com. But check their web page for current requirements before doing so.

Slant Review. They welcome a diverse range of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other creative writing. They're also always on the lookout for good cover art. Story House. Likes uplifting stories of around a thousand words to put on coffee can labels. Also looking for good flash pieces. Got poetry? They like that, too. They would like to serialize longer pieces, as long each thousand words can stand alone and induce the reader to buy the next can of coffee to see what happens next. Cthulhu Sex. Looking for tales of blood, sex and tentacles. How much more specific can you get? Pay in three contributor's copies. Looking for stories under 5K words. Excaliber Press. Comic book type publications that also publish short fiction. You need to either have an illustrator or be an illustrator to break into this market. Send submissions to excaliberpress@yahoo.com

Futurismic is an interesting ezine specializing in Sci-Fi. They pay a flat hundred bucks per story, whether its a thousand words or ten thousand. They're online submissions form is at http://www.futurismic.com/contact/index.html#submit. This is the only way they accept submissions, and unfortunately they're closed for the rest of 2004. Check back with them in January.

Gothic.net. Dark, smart, wierd, creepy fiction is their description. It's an online ezine that pays three cents a word. Send your stories to submit@gothic.net. In the subject line of your email, put Fiction Submission: Story Title. Your Name. Well, actually they want you to put the REAL title of your story and your REAL name in those spots.

Horror Garage is definitely NOT for the stable minded. Horror stories are all they want. And only the unusual need apply. They pay $25.00 and up for each story. Submit stories in RTF format only to HGSubs666@hotmail.com.

Ideomancer is one of the more elegant ezines I've seen. I'd have had this page up two hours ago if I hadn't gotten lost in there. Like so many others, they only accept emailed submissions in .RTF format. Any other file type will be deleted unopened. They pay three cents a word up to a maximum of $100.00. They like Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, something they call "slip-stream" and they're one of the few horror mags that like flash. Email RTF files to fiction@ideomancer.com.   

Nightland. Looks for stories set within William Hope Hodgson's Nightland universe. Pays five to eleven cents a word. Send stories to andywrobertson@clara.co.uk.

Oceans of the Mind is a quarterly ezine distributed as a PDF document. These guys pay six cents a word and up for hard Sci-Fi or character driven Sci-Fi. Each issue follows a theme and your submission should match up to that theme. Winter 2004 is "Editor's Choice". In other words, for this issue, I lied. There is no theme other than an editor liked it and it didn't fit anywhere else. Spring of 2005 will be Military Sci-Fi, while Summer 2005 deals with how our sports are affecting the future. PIF Magazine. Online Literary Journal. Mainstream and literary fiction. Pays $50 to $200.00 for stories up to 4K words. Don't email stories. Use their online submissions form at http://www.pifmagazine.com/submit.php.

Strange Horizons. Fantasy and Sci-Fi up to 9K words (prefers shorter). Pays five cents a word. Send submissions to fiction@strangehorizons.com.

Wicked Hollow. Likes any implementation of horror, even if it crosses over into another genre. Maximum word count is 4.5K, but your chances improve with shorter stories. Pays a quarter of a cent per word, with a minimum of five bucks. Send submissions to wickedhollow@blindside.net
